Cheeni Kum

Today’s movie : CHEENI KUM

Star Cast : Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Zohra Sehgal, Swini Khara

My Rating : 3 /5

Hi folks,

It has been a long time ever since my last post on this blog. Can't help dude, I had exams and then something important to carry on! Anyways, Let's come back to the movie "Cheeni Kum".

You know, times are changing (they always do, there is nothing new about it, i know!) and everyone is trying to get a bit of western culture! Don't take it wrong! It's the rule of this world. Or say the fundamentals of human development! So, it's a sign that we are no more those stick in the mud who were shy to discuss the matters of man and woman in public. We are not only open now but also want to debate these issues, discuss them and look for a better alternative for what is being followed since ages. And moreover, in my opinion it's always better to understand things. It's always better to move a step ahead others.

Coming Back! I went to theater yesterday to watch Cheeni Kum and was a bit taken aback by the empty theater (just the quorum!). No doubts! it's already a week late, and was a night show so people turned were less. I had no doubts about the movie as none other than my favourite Mr. Amitabh was there. ;-) Dashing! Typical! All new role! All new look! But the style - it was the same old! Every superstar tends to develop some traits and he has his too. Though such, he is still better than the best... :)

As I told you, it's not just another conventional love story! It's a whacking film when it comes to the purpose of media, which in my opinion is -

To demonstrate people the new, unconventional and practicable ways of life and to tell them that there is something which is yet to be tasted and discovered, yet, not abetting them for unethical and immoral activities.

This movie is a great step forward in fulfilling the above purpose. This is a story of love and marriage of 34 year old, young lady from Delhi to a 64 year old, good old guy from London. ;) Pardon me, I am confused so words may seem a bit inappropriate! These guys fall in love and this movie tries to represent quite unique and not easy to understand chemistry in a simple way. It has to be a bit vulgar to me as I am just 24 now and still consider Love as a sacred thing(which I guess it is not!). So, as I told with time we are changing and are fluently using some unconventional words in dialogues in movies. Let me quote the most uncommon dialogue from this movie which has been used in it's promo everywhere (Mr. Amitabh to Tabu) --

Marriage is a price a man pays to have sex and Sex is the price a woman pays for marriage. So, after understanding this very secret of marriage, Would you like to marry me?

But apart from this, the movie is really a whacking success for the team! I don't know whether it'll be able to earn on box office or not! Direction is just superb. Talk about emotions. I can't keep my mind off the last scene where Mr. Bachchan cries for a young girl friend of him(a six year old sweet girl) who dies of Cancer. This scene I personally would rate the best scene in the movie.

Dimensions:

As I always do in the end, I tell you the Dimensions of the movie. This blog is not just another Movie Blog. But, it has a purpose. My all blogs including this one intend to tell you something good for you and for this society. My purpose through these blogs has always been to help you decide on those issues, where you feel uncomfortable and indecisive. So here, I think upon this movie.

Why is the title "Cheeni Kum"?

This movie is about old aged people when things tend to slow down and life starts to loose it's charm, it's passion. The symbolic meaning of Cheeni kum is this "Dying Interest in Life". That at that age everything tends to appear sweet-less and dull. We in India have a tendency to throw ourselves old when we get to move beyond the age of 50. We tend to portray ourselves like above 70. We walk slow, we think slow, we don't want to work, we seem to picture our life as it's ending every sec, slowly-slowly. Movie has targeted such people and has tried to convey them that don't die till you are dead! Remove those mind blocks and move ahead, still you have the stamina and guts required to do everything a young man can do; you are still so very young! I guess that's a good point and have been raised by the movie meticulously.

At times we become blind to our needs and we tend to forget things which we actually should have aspired for.

This idea has been beautifully presented in the movie in the last scene which I was talking about. To get the feel you need to watch this movie. At times, in life we get into a situation when we are crazy about something. We tend to overlook every other thing in those times. We forget what actually we want and what are the consequences of our actions. Say, for example, when we fall in love with a girl or a boy, we almost forget all what our family has done for us and our sole intention is to get to marry that girl or boy. And in this process, we don't even wait for a moment that how many persons we hurt. We just care about ourselves. How can we be so selfish? And down the line when we look back we see things lost, memories bitter and hearts broken. Then we think - "oh my god! what have I done!! This is not what I wanted!"

What I have to say is -

Widen your perspective. Look beyond a few selfish desires. Think carefully before you pursue. Cause it should not happen that at a point of time in life, when you have lost your everything for a particular reason, then you come to know that this was a mere waste. And that you lost your everything in pursuing something which was as rubbish and useless. Think Before you act! :)

So friends, Enjoy this movie! Go to theater! May be you too learn something as I do! And then teach me what you learned, so that I get to see a few more DIMENSIONS...

THANK YOU.

ANTHONY KAUN HAI?

Today’s movie : ANTHONY KAUN HAI?

Star Cast :Sanjay Dutt..... Master Madan, Arshad Warsi.... Champ, Minissha Lamba.... Jiya, Anousha Dhandekar..... Rosa, Raghuveer Yadav.... Magician Raghu Sharma, Gulshan Grover.... Detective Suraj Singh

My Rating : 2.5 /5

Anthony Kaun Hai? is another movie from the hit pair of Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi. The entire movie circles around finding out who is Anthony...

It's a flashback and the transition between past and present is in synchronisation.. You don't feel like asking yourself everytime whether it's present or past, like I was doing in Moksh, the Arjun Rampal starrer movie... And one more thing.. There are no more Black & White flashbacks.. it's all colour movie.. ;)

Sanjay Dutt has played a straight role of a no nonsense man. His cold blooded murders at the hotel seem to stretch reality to its limits. One may add that he's a person with a heart for god people. Arshad Warsi has again done a commendable job... As he has changed so many getups but still managing them all. The fact that he has matured as a n actor is evident from this film.

The actress from Viruddh seems to have learnt a tad more of Hindi and has played a short and sweet and gorgeous role.. But the other actress Minissha Lamba has not been very good to her role.. She needs to put emotions in her presentation... I felt like dialogues were dry.. :(
Gulshan Grover, as an indian police officer, has played his part well though his occasional humming of songs appear out of place at times..

The movie is an interesting comparision to the film "Chocolate". The only difference being the truth.. In Chocolate, it's a framed lie, but here in AKH it's a true story...

Dimensions:

As always, The question is same - What did this movie tell me?

You may think that it was an all fun and no sense movie but hey! don't jump to conclusions very hastily. In next few lines I shall show you some real striking aspects of the movie...

Firstly, Indian cinema, of late has movies with bizarre endings - some of them pleasant, some onexpected and some untold. While the actor in earlier films would ruin his life for his lost love, the actor here moves on. Now this is new to us and this is what appeals me.. Movies these days are trying to show us a new dimension and that says to move on.. To cherish life and welcome new things...

Secondly, and related to the first point, is the fact that this movie somehow somewhere questions a so-called myth - "Love happens once in life". Champ loved Roza and then he loves GIa. His love for one was no less than the love for the other but yes, one at a time... ;) I might sound offensive to so called Real Lovers, but believe me or not, the in-thing now is - Love all you can but if you love yourself, leave when that is the only option. Go ahead, start a new life, find a new love and love your love and life.. Live life and live the best!

Finally, In the last scene of the movie, Gia asks Champ to part with the diamonds of some 10 crores if he loved her... Not surprising, if like other indian movies he does as told... But in the next blink, unlike other movies, Gia tells him to get those back that she was simply testing him.. Now this is what I call a practical girl... This movie somewhere stresses the fact that it's good if you have some ethics and values in life but be practical and handle those ethics carefully, so that you don't smash your life...

LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI

Today’s movie : LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI

Star Cast : Arshad Warsi - Circuit, Boman Irani - Lucky Singh, Vidya Balan - RJ Jahnvi, Dia Mirza - Simran, Jimmy Shergill - Victor D'souza, Munna Bhai - Murali Prasad Sharma.

Story Line : Comedy..

My Rating : 3.5 /5

First of all I thank you for your fabulous responses to Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna review.

Today’s movie, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, a continuation of Munna Bhai MBBS, is an earnest effort to reestablish the Indian edifice of bonhomie. Chummy character of Munna Bhai gets chummier in this movie. It’s one of the best dishes served by Bollywood which contains flavor of love, belief, inner strength, brotherhood and clean comedy which you can enjoy in your home with all family sitting together.

Munna Bhai and Circuit are the same but this time Vidya Balan has taken the actress’ role. The rising actress has played her role beautifully and I think this film will definitely be another feather in her cap. Listen to “Good morning Mumbai” on radio and you instantly become her fan. Songs are lively and the choreography has been natural to fit Sanjay Dutt’s persona. The title song “Lage raho munnabhai” is also good.

The movie starts with tapori style activities and slowly moves on to rather sincerity. Many questions have been raised on our present day society and moral values. How far have we drifted from our culture? If you really understand what the movie’s trying to convey, you will see how beautifully the contents of immense seriousness have been served with a tinge of comedy and laughter. If you have got the slightest desire to change for the betterment, then this movie will definitely imbue and help you do the same.

The movie is really powerful -- when you go inside the theatre, you either get revamped or at least come out thinking about a revamp.

So, now if you’ve already been there, no probs, you know it all what I said. And if you haven’t been to the theatre yet, drop everything and go to the theatre first. No body knows, you are a better “You” tomorrow.

Dimensions:

This movie, in the name of chemical changes, recalls Bapu, his virtues and his visions of the free India. It has beautifully portrayed how those principles of “Satya and Ahimsa” are still alive and can be efficiently and powerfully implemented in our life, in the 21st century.

Secondly, this movie says that win your enemy with love. If someone hits you, you don’t hit him back.

Somewhere, somehow, this movie has also portrayed the power of Love when it shows a dramatic and complete revamp of Munna when he falls in Love. This may appear a bit dramatic, but if you have known love sometime or the other, you may believe it.

Teachings of the movie are same as of Bapu and can be summarized as below—

  1. Speak truth and be fearless.
  2. If you do wrong to someone, say “Sorry”. It takes a lot of guts to say “Sorry”.
  3. Don’t ever reciprocate hatred.
  4. Importunate your rights in kind and innocuous fashion.
  5. Always do right things and you need not lie.
  6. No profession is shameful.
  7. Drop superstitions.
  8. Help others as much as you can.
  9. Life is the greatest possession you have, don’t ever lose it.
  10. Good times and bad times keep switching, so don’t worry if your times is not good, it will last soon.
  11. Finally, don’t forget the teachings of those great saints and try your best to follow them; they will fetch you more benefits than you can think of.
So, now if you’ve already been there, no probs, you know it all what I said. And if you haven’t been to the theatre yet, drop everything and go to the theatre first. No body knows, you are a better “You” tomorrow.

KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA

Today’s movie : KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA

Star Cast : Shahrukh, Rani, Amitabh, Abhishek, Preeti

Story Line : A Family Melodrama..

My Rating : 3 /5

Friends,

It’s already two and a half weeks since its release and if you are reading my blog (which sends me an impression that you are an enthusiastic cinemagoer like I am) it means you have already been to theatres and watched this movie. So for being late in my review, I apologize to you and promise you that next time you’ll be reading the review almost on the day of release.

So, first, I’ll tell you a few things about the movie. Don’t worry. I won’t expatiate much as I suppose you’ve already been to the theatres. Pals, here’s a movie which has added new dimensions to the concepts of family, marriage and conjugal happiness. No surprise, it’s another star-studded film from Karan Johar with exotic locations generously thrown in. By now, you must have guessed that it’s a melodrama with flawless choreography and rocking songs like “Where’s the party tonight”. The characters are intertwined in such a way that it’s almost impossible to adjudge the individual performance and so it doesn’t give any edge to anyone or you can say that everyone has taken an edge. Talking about big B (the most experienced and respected superstar in the movie starcast), his promiscuous role seems a bit odd to his age and Indian society and in my opinion, draws more ridicule than humour.

This movie depicts startling facts of contemporary life. It’s still not in sync with the imagination of an Indian about an institution called marriage. The perplexity of the behavior of characters sometimes makes you term the movie a figment of somebody’s absurd imagination. At times , you feel , like the movie sequences, are going to result into nothing or mere disappointment.

I don’t know if you guessed or not – when big B came to know that her daughter-in-law was in love with somebody other than his son and he had a heart attack, at that time, Rani M. goes to big B seeking some guidelines about the future prospects of her relationship with junior Bachhan, the big B uses just three words –

“Chhod do usko”.

He adds further, “If you don’t leave him he won’t ever be able to find his love of life. So, let him live. Walk away from his life”

Dimensions:

Incontrovertibly, the movie has gone radical on so many fronts and has shown numerous dimensions. I don’t know if I’ll be able to cull out all those in this small piece. I’ve tried my best to assimilate the salient lessons from this movie.

The first and most important one is that you should marry the one whom you want to be married to all your life and beyond.

Second, having married such a person, do all that can be done to keep your marriage alive and kicking. If you’ve taken the first point seriously, taking care of the second won’t be a problem. Besides, I even dare to promote love marriage if you’re not sure whether your arranged marriage will take good care of the first mentioned point.

Third, to err is human but to err repeatedly amounting to infidelity in marriage is a sin in my opinion.

Fourth, conjugal happiness must not be solely based on satisfaction in sex life. I don’t discount its importance in married life but definitely urge couples to show tolerance and have an understanding attitude.

Fifth, the transformation of big B’ character from promiscuity to death bed avidly shows that we, Indians, inspite of being modern in outlook, have clear boundaries in our personal life. Daring to cross them can result in irreparable loss.

Also, a child should ideally be the glue which bonds the couple and not a bone of contention.

Lastly, on a lighter note, I would say that “fight to save your marriage” both literally and against all odds.

I guess you heard all that and if you take relationships as I do, then you perfectly understand what I am saying.

CHAMELI

Friends,

Here I start ‘Dimensions’ with a hope that we can bring a few hidden Dimensions alive. By Dimensions I mean the best part of a movie, which tells you something good or imbues you to do something good; which gives you a new vision to look at life from a different perspective; which tells you that that is the way of life you were unaware of…

Today’s movie : CHAMELI

Star Cast : Rahul Bose & Kareena Kapoor

Story Line : It revolves around the life of a prostitute which starts at night and ends by morning

My Rating : 3 /5

You know, I don’t advocate so called ‘openness’ or in straight words “vulgarity in the name of reality” in movies. When my friends came to me after watching this movie (at the time of the release, perhaps I had some work to do and I missed the first show. I don’t remember exactly as it’s way back in ---------), their bla-bla-bla sent me an impression that this was a movie which was trying to portray reality with “openness”!!

So, I planned to drop watching this movie and I did. Time passed and I had been restricting myself for long not to watch it. But one fine night while I was surfing channels, it was coming on Star Plus, I decided to watch it. Not to mention, songs of this movie “Bheegi Hui…” & “Bhage Re Mann” had been one of my favourites since its release. Really beautiful songs!! I appreciate the team, for they have done a fabulous job.

I don’t deny that it’s a movie not for children under 15 or so… Actually, they have portrayed (remind me if I say “They are trying to portray”) a prostitute whose life begins at night and ends by the morning. Character of Chameli has to be bold and specifically a combination of boldness, harshness, practicality and most important “softness of a woman”. I was really mesmerized to see that how could you enact such a character in a movie with such fineness! The perfection for which, even a prostitute will need at least 10 yrs. in the profession. Actress has done it wonderful. The scene still flashes in front of my eyes when she is telling her story to Rahul Bose. With all softness she tells her life story which can drive anyone and then all of a sudden she starts laughing and tells that it was one of those lies which she uses for her customers, to draw emotional support. Then she tells another false story (formula no. 2) and laughs again… it’s really worth watching!

Rahul Bose has acted perfectly as a man who has lost his wife; a man who thinks that it was his fault which killed her. His car broke down in the rain one night at a place where this prostitute looks for customers, and the story starts. There are numerous incidents and dialogues which are just perfect for the story line at times and you can feel the meaning or essence only by watching those scenes.

While watching, I didn’t find any exaggeration of “openness” in the movie except in the song “Bhage Re Mann”. I will count it as the flip side of the movie. I guess it was done just to pull the crowd in theatres. After all it’s BUSINESS!! ;)

DIMENSIONS

Now the question is- “What did the movie say to me - a person who is not a social worker and not much interested in rehabilitation of such people? What did this movie have for me?”

To me, this movie tells that there are numerous difficulties in life, there are numerous incidents which leave a scar (never to be healed) on your heart and generally we don’t have the guts to accept them as we are not as open as prostitutes. They have got deeper scars but you don’t see them because the profession has made them so tough that they are ready to accept the pain any time. If we could gather even a part of that courage, we can deal with difficulties very easily.

This theme has been beautifully portrayed when, in the end, the actor opens his box to open those pictures of his wife which he had closed after her death for the fear of her memories. He rings up his father-in-law with whom he had never talked after his wife’s death. He says-

“That day I opened those pictures because that day I had accepted all the pain and memories of her death. I called my father-in-law and talked to him whom I had not called since her death.”

Movie said to me that don’t fear pain and memories. No matter how deep is the scar on your heart, just keep it inside and laugh, have a few relations and don’t die for those relations, for someone dear to you has died. Live life and Love them all.

I think you can see these Dimensions...
